Del Potro facing French Open heartbreak

World number 6 Juan Martin Del Potro faces a race against time to be fit for the French Open after being forced to pull out of his last 16 clash against David Goffin in the Italian Open.

Del Potro was 2-6, 5-4 down against Goffin before aggravating his groin and with the second Grand Slam of the year on the red dirt of Roland-Garros starting on the 27 May, the 29-year-old former US Open Champion will struggle to be fit in time.

Del Potro’s career has been plagued by injuries to his wrist over the last several years, at one stage his ranking dropping to 1045 back in 2016. However, the big hitting talent has managed to bounce back over the last two years, climbing back into the top 10 in January this year.

The Argentine, a losing finalist in Auckland, has also registered two ATP Tour wins this season in Acapulco and then the Indian Wells Masters event, when he beat an inform Roger Federer in the final.

While the hard courts and the grass of Wimbledon are the surfaces that suit his power game the most, he is still capable of beating anyone in the world on the slower clay courts.

With Wimbledon not far out Del Potro will not want to force his way back too soon especially considering he would be a very good outside bet to go all the way at SW19.
