Hamilton Pens new Mercedes deal
Lewis Hamilton has penned a new two-year deal with Mercedes, thought to be worth in the region of £40m a year. The deal will see Hamilton race for the Silver Arrows for 2019 and 2020, with an option to extend for 2021.
Had the defending F1 Champion not have signed, he would have become a much sought-after commodity in F1, however the deal secures his status as the highest paid sports star in the UK.
The timing of the announcement couldn’t have been more poignant with round 11 of the Formula One World Championship coming from Hockenheim this weekend and the German Grand Prix, the home race of the Mercedes outfit.
Adding to this it is also a race that Hamilton has won on three occasions and is an 8/5 favourite to make it four, with victory the perfect way to celebrate the announcement.
Hamilton has won three out of his four World Championships with the Silver Arrows since he first joined in 2012, and is currently 3/5 to win a fifth and draw level with Juan Manuel Fangio.
I have been in the Mercedes Family since 1998. I am forever grateful for their continued support, love and protection over these years. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and even more excited for the future! @MercedesAMGF1 #grateful #letsgo #announcelewis pic.twitter.com/sXo0UnKeIs

Mercedes Team Principle Toto Wolff was ideally looking to secure his services for another five years, however with new F1 regulations coming into effect in 2021, the landscape looks a little uncertain, hence the reason why most of the top drivers like Vettel and Verstappen have contracts finishing in 2020.
Hamilton’s announcement will surely put pressure on the likes of Daniel Ricciardo to sign his new Red Bull deal, especially off the back of the talk circulating that Ferrari will decide between Kimi Raikkonen and Charles Leclerc as their second seat for next season.
