Red Bull sign a two-year deal with Honda

Red Bull will become a “works” team for the first time in their history after ending their 12-year partnership with Renault in favour of Honda.

Honda who already provide Toro Rosso with their engines will now have two teams on the grid for the Formula One World Championship in 2019 and 2020.

The move comes less than a year after McLaren ended their three-year relationship with the engine provider after a disastrous return to F1.

Red Bull team principle Christian Horner has become despondent with the performance of the Renault power unit over the last few years and feels that this new deal with the Japanese manufacturer will bring back the glory days that saw his team deliver four consecutive World Championships to Sebastian Vettel between 2010 and 2013.

With Daniel Ricciardo out of contract at the end of the season, one wonders if he will now remain with the team off the back of this news and potentially push for a move to Ferrari, as speculated earlier this season.

The news comes ahead of this weekend’s French Grand Prix which returns to the Circuit Paul Ricard for the first time since 2008.
